The computer can be used to display text and graphical materials in the classroom. Once the faculty member has a PC and a good projector, the "white board" can become a window to any resource on the web or a very malleable way to make notes and diagrams, feature a particular text, or focus the attention of the class. Some systems allow students with PCs to respond to the teacher's questions – letting every student participate in the Socratic dialogue. Some are already using graphical outlining tools, interactive diagrams of statutes and cases, and other experimental products being developed by the committee. Different faculty members will choose different options – but we have found few who would not themselves like to have the option of putting a computer screen up for all students to see.

There are differing views regarding whether students should be encouraged to bring PCs into the classroom. This decision should be made by faculty members on a case by case basis. It may be that our experiments with tablet PCs will show that these make student use of computers in class no more intrusive than use of pen and paper. Infrastructure changes need to be made to give interested faculty the option.
