IT out of Class: Faculty - Student

Many of the most innovative uses of technology for teaching extend the reach of faculty-student communications beyond the class hour. Some of the materials you provide in class could be accessed by students on their own schedules - freeing up class time for enriched interactions. Some tools provide better means to track what students are "getting" and to challenge them to master the materials before exam time. Some tools focus on giving students continuous feedback

The new approaches that seem to be most promising are:

  1. Establishment of a web page for every class.
  2. Establishment of a class blog in which the faculty member participates from time to time.
  3. Creation of specific screen based exercises or interactive simulations that can be described briefly in class but then used by students outside of class – perhaps in some cases to create work product that is then transmitted back to the teacher and evaluated and could become the subject of further class discussion.
  4. Faculty administered provision/assessment of CALI materials, and similar interactive problem exercises, directly related to a course.
  5. Recording and streaming audio of class lectures to make these available to those who miss a class or to those who want to review the lecture.

Some of these approaches require only one time efforts and will reduce time that would otherwise be spent on repetitive tasks – such as redoing non-electronic teaching materials, grading quizzes, and using class time to assess student progress.
